The One That Got Away (My Thunder Bay Fishing Story)

I love to fish; I especially love to fish the great lakes. Some of the best is Lake Superior fishing, it simply cannot be beat! This is my story of the one that got away and yes it was the biggest fish ever.
It was a beautiful summer day in the middle of Ontario on the greatest lake of them all, Lake Superior. If you have not been to Thunder Bay I suggest you go one reason is that it’s a beautiful city the other is because Thunder Bay Fishing is the greatest. You have 100’s of little lakes and of course Lake Superior, which has great fishing. Now to my story of the one that got away, I was using a down rigger and an 8 foot rod with a devil spoon as fishing tackle. It was like any other normal day with a slight breeze and calm waters. Then all of a sudden my rod went crazy and right then I knew it was a big fish. I battled and battled with it for about 20 minutes. Then with the sun perhaps shining as bright as it has all summer I saw the belly of the beast about 20 feet from my boat. It then took a deep dive underneath the belly of my boat which is a fisherman’s worst nightmare; I knew I was in trouble! Five minutes later it surfaced again and looked me straight in the eye as if to look at me so he could tell all his friends the look I had on my face, when he spit out the hook. Then like he was just having fun with me all along opened his mouth and spit out my hook and darted into the deep black abyss. It took a minute for it to sink in and a slight tear down my cheek until I realized what really just took place. But alas there are more days and more battles to look forward, but somewhere in me still thinks that, that fish is somewhere in that lake having a beer with his pals laughing at me.

Do you have any stories of the one that got away?
